Safe Beds for Pets (the rspca ROCKS)

The RSPCA needs your support to continue this program for people experiencing domestic violence.

SAFE BEDS FOR PETS
Large numbers of family members in domestic violence situations have pets. Sadly, these family pets often become directly involved in domestic violence, as abuse of a pet is a tactic commonly used to control, hurt and intimidate the victim.

Fear of leaving pets in the hands of a violent partner often prevents or delays victim's leaving a domestic violence situation.

Australian studies have indicated that between 50 and 85 per cent of women who experienced domestic violence had a family pet and that 54 per cent of abused women indicated that their partner had hurt or killed their family pets.

Many victims of domestic violence delay leaving the abusive relationship because of fear of what will happen to their pets.

In addition, over a third of people in the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex community experience domestic violence or abuse.

The Safe Beds for Pets program was established to provide temporary housing for pets of people who are seeking refuge from domestic violence and to address the link between animal and human abuse and child protection.

The safe beds program is not a long-term solution to the housing of the pet, but it gives domestic violence victims peace of mind and allows them to secure their own safety and make arrangements for the future.

It is common practice for the perpetrator of domestic violence to lure family members back home by threatening to harm the pet.

With the Safe Beds for Pets Program families can now leave domestic violence situations and not fear for the safety of their pets.

Re: Safe Beds for Pets (the rspca ROCKS)

And there's an organisation called PoOPS (Pets of Older People)who also seek volunteers who visit, feed, walk, groom etc dogs and cats of oldies who are frail, sick, housebound, etc.
They need people who can also take the animals into their homes for a while if the elderly owner needs to go to hospital, or residential care, or dies.
Concern for their animals keeps a lot of oldies from getting the care they need. And conversely, some animals get a bit neglected as their owner ages and can't look after them so well.
Google PoOps and see..i think it's also sponsored by the rspca.
People will put the safety of their animals before their own health and safety, a wonderful thing but they need support.
And i agree that the practice of using animals and a good owner's concern for them, to manipulate or threaten, is not uncommon, and these good owners and animals also need support.
So many on the sofa seem to love dogs and cats, these seem like 2 great organisations to support!
