Since most people succeed with the help of their partner, most successful heterosexual women would have had the support of a man, just as most successful heterosexual men would have had the support of a woman.
So you're basically asking about successful lesbians I guess.

Re: Name me a Woman who has suceeded in Business without a Man's Backing
It depends on what is meant buy "successful". Remember people like Mum Shirl? I am sure she didn't have much money, but she worked for Aboriginal communities and with children, and propbably quitly achieved what most of us might never achieve.
Putting dollar values on women's contribution to the world buys into capitalist notions of what "success" is. Also, it might be useful to work out how women made their money- if women made heaps of money buying shares in armaments, or by buying up real estate in ghettos, gentrifying communities and "resettling" poor communities, is that success?
Money can be made in all manner of corrupt ways, or legal, but morally questionable ways. I reckon notions of the "glass ceiling" are bogus (liberal democratic-ugh) anyhoo, and I reckon all women should be equal- not privileging some rich white woman over other women.

I say leave Kerrin there, you aren't going to get a left winger heading up the AMA. I think it is amazing there was a woman and not to mention one who openly identified as a lesbian. Cheers T

I agree Terrei...Kerryn still got where she is now because of her own determination and self reliance. She fits the category, I say we let her stay!

Re: Name me a Woman who has suceeded in Business without a Man's Backing
I agree with the last two posts.
Let's not kid ourselves and think there is such a huge difference between the Liberal and Labor parties anyway.
Why persecute Kerryn for her politics ? It's like saying knock her off the list because she is Christian.
Being a member of the Liberal party is not tantamount to being a member of the Ku Klux Klan for gosh sake.

Re: Name me a Woman who has suceeded in Business without a Man's Backing
Marie Watson-Blake was a great Queenslander who died in the 1990's. Many may not have known of her but she was the reason Jetset Travel was so big in Queensland. Even creating the flight centre style of businesses. She was the first to develop Kangaroo Point in Brisbane. Her husband (who died way before her) and herself were successful in their own rights - seperately. In her hayday she raced cars, sailed yachts and did a lot that many people said women could not do. She is the only woman who I have truly respected, and found to have a distinct presence when they entered a room. She had a strength beyond the physical but was still a woman in many ways. Photos of her and her success often filled the Courier Mail, not front page but still there. When I worked for her I noticed that men bowed in her presence, a rare thing in the 80's.

Re: Name me a Woman who has suceeded in Business without a Man's Backing
...... ME.
Of course, if you live in the United States, ANY woman can own her own business ... and without having to get a bank loan with outrageous interest rates or repay any money.
Check out: the Economic Business Development Authority in your County and State. They have information on and access to free business grants through the US Government for women and minorities only. The granst can be in the amount of $20,000. to $1,000,000. depending on your business plan/idea.
Only Women & Minorities are eligible for this program which, while funded through the Small Business Administration, can only be accessed through the Economic Business Development Authority in your US location.
In addition, once you receive your first grant, you can then apply for more for the purposes of expanding your business. Also, often people who enter this program can open their buisness and the Government will waive the need for you to pay taxes for two years and somtimes longer.
Good Luck and ... BATTLE ON !! SisterM (AKA- "M.")
